Micro LED full-color display was developed by the American company Sundiode
Recently, the American company Sundiode publicly demonstrated a full-color micro-display. Sundiode of Campbell, California, is a technology company headquartered in Silicon Valley that has been committed to the development of Micro LED technology for display applications including augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR). The microdisplay displayed this time uses a three-color light-emitting layer stacking scheme, specifically a red, green and blue 3-color Micro LED pixel array driven by an active matrix silicon CMOS backplane.
In fact, as early as late April this year, Sundiode proposed a different method of manufacturing Mini/Micro LEDs with a "stacked" structure. This technology was developed in cooperation with KOPTI (Korea Institute of Photonics Technology) and can provide Micro LEDs with RGB three-color superimposition and non-side-by-side pixels. The product recently demonstrated is based on the above-mentioned patent and the stacked RGB pixel microdisplay developed in cooperation with KOPTI.
In addition, the active matrix used in this product-a silicon-based CMOS drive backplane is provided by Jasper Display. It is reported that this product is a compact micro-display measuring only 15.4 mm x 8.6 mm, and a stacked RGB Micro LED pixel array is deposited and manufactured on the above-mentioned single CMOS drive backplane.
In fact, the pixel array is directly bonded to the above-mentioned silicon-based CMOS drive backplane as a whole, which can completely avoid the traditional mass transfer process required to transfer discrete R, G, and B pixels.
According to Sundiode, the microdisplay greatly improves the utilization of the small pixel area of the microdisplay. In the design process of this micro-display, the pixel size is designed to be 100μm, and it can be calculated that its resolution is about 200PPI. Now the company is in its next phase of product technology development, hoping to further increase the pixel density of the full-color microdisplay, so that it can be better used in AR and MR products.
This coincides with the "meta universe" concept of the recent fire. At present, many well-known terminal brands such as Apple, Xiaomi, and TCL have indicated that they will release AR/VR/MR products using Micro LED technology. Development is accelerated.
With the further development of epitaxy and manufacturing technology, they will gradually support the integration of stacked RGB pixel devices. This full-color microdisplay based on RGB stacking will be the final microdisplay for AR, MR and Metaverse based on Micro LED technology. An important step.
Finally, Sundiode said that it plans to continue to develop this ultra-high-resolution microdisplay using stacked RGB pixel technology in the future.
